This was a display that points to a player struggling to find his rhythm.
Becoming a problem
Neves is clearly a talented young midfielder and has been playing at a remarkably high level for a significant period of time, despite his age.
He already has over 100 appearances for Wolves and has also won 16 caps for Portugal but, this season, he hasn’t been at his best.
Per WhoScored, he has merited a rating over seven on just three occasions in the league. In his last three appearances, which includes a substitute run-out against Watford in which he played 36 minutes, he has reached a maximum of 6.38, which actually came on Saturday.
In those games, he has failed to register a single key pass or complete a dribble.
Santo needs to find a way to remedy this because, when he is at his best, Neves is a sensational midfield player, capable of both carrying the ball forward and shooting from range. This season, though, he has two league goals and just one assist to his name. He can do much better than that.
He is better than that.
