According to The Mirror, West Ham’s hopes of signing Slimani were always going to be a non-starter due to Karren Brady’s previous criticism of the Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.
The Hammers’ vice-chairwoman hit out at the Foxes’ hierarchy in a newspaper column following their dismissal of Claudio Ranieri, who had guided the team to the Premier League title the season before.
The publication claims that Brady wrote:
“A fellow Premier League director reports that last night he bumped into the Leicester chairman at London’s most-expensive wine shop. The Leicester owner told him they’d sacked Claudio Ranieri. He then casually settled his bill for wine and champagne. Since the sum was close to £500,000 I guess the compensation to his old manager is pocket change. At least the owner can drown his sorrows in style!”
The East London outfit reportedly attempted to secure a last-minute deal for Slimani, but enquiries were immediately rebuffed.
Brady’s remarks about Ranieri’s sacking were believed to have infuriated the Leicester owner.
Instead, West Ham ended up signing Preston North End forward Jordan Hugill.
