The Timo Werner to Liverpool links will not go away.
The RB Leipzig striker has been in stunning form so far this season. He has has 27 goals in 34 matches, and is only behind Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga scoring charts – the Poland international has 25 goals himself. It has been reported that the Reds have an interest in the 24-year-old, and that he even has a €60m (£52.2m) release clause.

Of course, he would be an interesting signing, with obvious quality. However, there is plenty of debate over whether he would even get into the side in the first place. Roberto Firmino is a popular figure at Anfield, and his teamwork and link-up ability are important to the way Jurgen Klopp’s side plays.
As a back-up option, his arrival could well make sense, but Klopp already has Takumi Minamino at his disposal as well. Not only that, Rhian Brewster is showing at Swansea City on loan why he should be considered for a place in the squad for next season.
The 19-year-old had made just two appearances for Liverpool before moving to Wales temporarily during the January transfer window, but he has already displayed his worth to the Swans. In nine starts, he has racked up four goals.
Even in just a short space of time, he has proven his credentials in front of goal, yet if Werner were to make the move to Anfield, it would surely be another obstacle for the youngster in his attempts to become an important member of Klopp’s squad.
The German’s release clause is not monumental, but it is certainly a substantial enough fee, especially when Brewster is starting to show he has the firepower to be Liverpool’s backup option – that role is a lot easier to sell to a teenager than a full international, who is already enjoying poster boy status at his current club.
It is a transfer that Michael Edwards and co should think about long and hard before moving ahead.
Meanwhile, Liverpool must avoid this transfer that would be a step backwards.
