da poker: One win from 18 outings to London since March 2015 tells the tale of Leeds’ form in the capital city. It’s a woeful record but fortunately for them, just two trips to the big smoke remain in the 2019/20 campaign. With an eight-point lead over Sheffield Wednesday, their fate will be determined at other parts of the country.
What could have the biggest impact, however, is not only themselves but also the officiating.
Like on one of their last trips to London, Leeds were on the end of a rather bizarre penalty decision. At Millwall a number of months ago, Gaetano Berardi saw red despite not touching Tom Bradshaw.
Meanwhile, at Craven Cottage on Saturday Ben White gently put his hands on the back of Bobby Reid, consequently giving away a spot-kick.
Understandably, Leeds fans were far from happy with their 2-1 defeat. As it appears, neither was the admin on the club’s official Twitter account who posted a comical yet petty tweet the day after the match.
It was a moment that caused embarrassment among some supporters as one told them to delete it, a fair enough message given how trivial it was. Another labelled it embarrassing, which again was another reasonable assessment of a professional account.
Further fans decided to display their anger with just how baffling the decision was. As the ball came in from the right-hand side, White gently challenged Reid for possession and he flopped to the ground.
As far as penalties go, it was one of the softest you’ll see. There was definite contact but if the referee is pointing to the spot over something like that, you’d expected to see multiple penalties a game.
The decision was so ridiculous that one fan labelled it the joke of the year. That might be overstepping the mark but you can forgive supporters for being so dismayed.
It will come as no surprise to see that a whole host of anger was directed at the referee at the centre of the controversy.

Taking charge of the game was Tim Robinson, someone who has now overseen three Leeds matches in 2019/20. That’s more than any other side in the division and it would be a shock if he were given another Whites game after this debacle.
Fans were so frustrated that one said an investigation should take place while another was in disbelief at the standard of officiating in the Championship. Given some of the calls that have gone against Leeds this term, it’s hardly surprising.
VAR came into the Premier League for the start of this season but with decisions like these being given, it’s hard to dispute that the second tier of English football would also benefit from video referees. Whether or not that can be implicated is a discussion for another day.
