da pinup bet: Rarely more so than now have we seen young, English talent that has so much potential. There is a very real amount of promise coming through the ranks at many clubs in England and we’ve seen the likes of John Stones, Dele Alli and Eric Dier all break into the senior set-up after just a couple of years on the scene. Scottish starlet, Oliver Burke, is another youngster that should be commended for the way he has dealt with a move to Germany with Red Bull Leipzig – not everyone could have done that. All this brings us onto the subject of this slightly scathing article: Jack Grealish. He’s the 21-year-old winger who plays somewhat part-time for Aston Villa. He’s been tipped by some Villa fans as one of the brightest prospects on their books right now and it’s so easy to see why. With a glint in his eye and a serious confidence, he skips past players like they’re not even there. He’s quick, agile and knows where the goal is and we’ve seen it on many an occasion when he’s in the claret and blue of Villa. But sometimes, his other interests get in the way of his football. Last summer, Grealish was seen taking popular party substance ‘hippy crack’ whilst on holiday with friends. This time, he’s been caught out partying all night in a hotel in Birmingham, to which police were called to as things got too rowdy.
Whilst these aren’t serious offences that are really damaging Grealish or others, it’s not doing his reputation any good at all and if anything, he’s becoming known as ‘that young player who parties too much’.
And after his antics, he’s been fined by Villa and was dropped for the visit of Newcastle United, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Grealish would surely have been a part of that Villa side and could have been the difference, but it’s been made clear by manager Roberto Di Matteo that the youngster needs to shape his future, and he’s right.
There are dozens of examples of young players that just haven’t lived up to reputations because of off the field distractions. Take Mario Balotelli or Ravel Morrison. Two players of which so much was expected but so little delivered. Why? Because they were too busy making a scene away from the football pitch.
And slowly, Grealish is becoming this brand of modern-day footballer. His potential is undoubted, the Villa fans love him and he has a seriously bright future. But these petty actions need to come to a stop and stop pretty soon.
Grealish isn’t a 16-year-old coming up from the academy anymore. He’s 21-years of age and in a couple of years, he’ll be expected to be a mentor for the next wave of young talent coming through the Villa Park doors. Only he can control his actions and only he will decide whether football is more important than everything else in his life.
There is a reason players like Steven Gerrard were so fantastic. It was because their disciplinary records were unblemished and whilst they were working, they were concentrating fully on their football.
Players like Grealish can make that happen too, but now the youngster has a choice to make. Partying, petty actions and childishness, or a career as a top-flight Premier League footballer.
For most of us, it seems like a pretty easy decision, right?
