da bet vitoria: Csaba Laszlo has declared that CFR Cluj need to target Craig Gordon while stopping Scott Sinclair in their Champions League clash against Celtic.
What’s he said?
The failed Dundee United manager is currently in charge of Romanian side OSK Sepsi and has been giving his opinion on Neil Lennon’s men. Lennon’s charges will face Cluj in Romania tonight in the first leg of the qualifiers, knowing that they’ll face Slavia Prague should they progress.
The Hungarian boss, who of course will know league rivals Cluj like the back of his hand, thinks he has the treble treble winners sussed and names several players in his assessment of the Hoops squad.
Laszlo states that he’s spotted weaknesses, as the Daily Record report: “Celtic have problems at the back and in goal. Celtic’s goalkeeper Craig Gordon has lost a lot of goals. Mikey Johnston is very good, but for me their biggest danger man is Scott Sinclair.”
What is he on about?
Laszlo is completely wrong in his assessment of Sinclair and Gordon. The keeper has featured just once this season, against Nomme Kalju, and he kept a clean sheet on his return to the squad as Celtic’s second-choice stopper.
Sinclair has been similarly quiet for the Celts this campaign, featuring for just 45 minutes across his three appearances so far. He’s seen his game time and, in turn, his impact on the side significantly hampered by the progress of Ryan Christie and Johnston.
It’s interesting that the Sepsi manager names Johnston as a threat though. The winger has come on leaps and bounds this season and has certainly impressed the fans with his capability to produce special moments.
He’s well on his way to nailing down a starting berth ahead of the likes of Sinclair, Marian Shved and Lewis Morgan, so it’s fair that Laszlo gave a mention to the 20-year-old.
And while the Hungarian comes across a bit out of touch, he goes some way to pay Celtic a compliment – even if he had no idea what he was doing, kind of like his ill-fated spell at Tannadice.
In picking out Sinclair, who is really now a support player rather than a key star, he has inadvertently highlighted the quality of depth the Hoops possess.
Stating that he thinks Gordon and Sinclair are still important members of the side when they’re actually little more than bit-part squad players shows the quality coursing through Lennon’s side, and perhaps means that Wednesday’s opponents are in for a rude awakening.
