Rubin Kazan defender Filip Uremovic claims he was set to sign for Celtic last month, but the deal fell through as another new signing went to Glasgow instead.
What’s he said?
The Croatia U21 centre-back has claimed he could’ve made the switch from Russia to Parkhead but the deal collapsed when the Hoops opted for someone else.
Logic assumes that’s Christopher Jullien, as the only centre-back to arrive this summer.
The French central defender was brought to the club for a £7m fee from Ligue 1 side Toulouse, not far behind the club’s record signing Odsonne Edouard, who cost £9m.
Jullien is yet to make his first competitive start for the Celts but it’s already looking like he could be part of the first-choice partnership at the heart of the club’s defence this season.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Uremovic said: “I had the option to move to Celtic this summer, but the transfer did not happen. But the reason the deal didn’t take place was because they went out and signed another player instead.”
Jullien is held in high esteem
The fact that Celtic prioritised Jullien over pursuing Uremovic, a decent prospect in his own right, shows how highly they value the 26-year-old. The defender was clearly priority number one as Lennon began to mould the side in his image this summer.
Many have felt a right-back should’ve been the club’s top priority, yet with a deal for Uremovic seemingly possible they jumped ship and went all out for Jullien, revealing exactly where their priorities lay.
It’s not just Celtic that rate the French defender highly either. Multiple Premier League sides were interested in the services of the giant last summer as Southampton and Newcastle made contact with the player’s entourage, but to no avail.
While he never ended up in the English top flight, it’s a nice compliment that he grabbed the interest of two established Premier League outfits.
We’ve yet to see much of Jullien but the signs are positive as Celtic look to justify their massive outlay. The fervent manner in which they concluded the deal and the previous interest in the player from huge clubs like Newcastle suggest he’ll be everything you’d expect from the Bhoys’ sixth most expensive signing ever.
