da pinup bet: Immediate solutions are hard. Even for Jose Mourinho, it seems. The ultimate short-term success manager is yet to make a meaningful mark upon Manchester United, with his team sitting within the unsettling comfort of mid-table. Manchester United have not been the force we have become accustomed to in the last few seasons and, currently equidistant between relegation and the top of the table, there are few signs that there will be a drastic change at Old Trafford.

Excuses can of course be made for Mourinho’s early difficulties. Adjusting the squad to what suits him and finding the best use for some of his ageing players are challenges, and they are challenges that have troubled Mourinho so far. He has, for the most part, been uncertain about how to set his side up. Inconsistencies in selection have caused imbalance in the side and, although injuries will be bemoaned, Mourinho is largely at fault for the Red Devils’ poor start to the season. His decision making, that is usually so clear-cut and ruthless, has become clouded over the last couple of years.
Quickly leaping to blame his players – something he would never have done at the peak of his powers – is the clearest sign Mourinho’s ego is now being put before the team. As opposed to his win at all costs, protect the players motto of before, Mourinho has become increasingly self-concerned. His reputation is on the line at the moment and his public showings are growing in aggression already. We are already seeing the Mourinho we expect from the Portuguese in his third season at a club, not the first.
It might not be feasible for Mourinho to change his nature. That approach, however, is yet to bear fruit at Manchester United. He is at risk of alienating players each week. The greatest upside of late has been the performances of Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick, they are giving the impression that Mourinho might have stumbled upon the right midfield combination. That is the start of a longer-term solution for Mourinho.
His downfall at the weekend, though, was forfeiting the initiative to protect his lead. It has previously been one of the cornerstones of his success, but it is a flawed approach with this Manchester United team. Stronger defences can deal with a late barrage, but opting to sit deep and defend for your lives with a lead is not a game this team can play (yet).
A change in Mourinho’s approach, to both motivation and team setup, can turn Manchester United’s season around. Their current standing in the Premier League does not suggest a team that has the potential to win the league – do not let that fool you. The squad that Mourinho has at his disposal is far better than even he would have you believe, as he demands further big name signings. A blank cheque book was seemingly at his disposal last summer, any squad weaknesses should have been addressed then.
Stark underachievement for Mourinho thus far cannot be simply blamed on injuries. Manchester United’s squad is not the best in Europe, but it is certainly not at the level that it is currently performing. Anything other than top four finish should leave Mourinho’s job under threat, particularly in the light of the summer spending spree.
