da pinnacle: According to The Sun, Everton are planning to sign Man United defender Chris Smalling on a free transfer at the end of the season.
da bet vitoria: The England international’s contract at Old Trafford expires in June, and it is unlikely that he will be offered a new one after manager José Mourinho has public criticised the defender on a number of occasions.
However, while the Portuguese does not look upon him favourably, the 28-year-old was once a very promising player under Sir Alex Ferguson, and was the Man United Players’ Player of the Year under Louis van Gaal. The defender obviously has the ability, but his current manager may not be able to get the best out of him, which wouldn’t be for the first time.
Everton may find themselves in the near future very depleted when it comes to their centre-backs. Kurt Zouma is due to leave at the end of the season and return to parent club Chelsea, and Phil Jagielka is definitely in the twilight years of his career at the age of 36. Meanwhile, Yerry Mina could potentially return to Barcelona, who have a buy-back clause on his contract. While the club have the likes of promising players Mason Holgate and Brendan Galloway, they would only really have one recognised experienced centre-back in Michael Keane.
Smalling could facilitate the new era of Everton defenders coming through, as well as being a hugely dependable defender himself. For years, The Toffees have had the reliable head of Jagielka at Goodison Park, and Smalling could be the man to take over.
