da fazobetai: According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Southampton are reportedly considering making a move for Portuguese manager Paulo Sousa if they sack Mark Hughes.
The Welshman is under huge pressure at St Mary’s following a 3-2 defeat to fellow strugglers Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, with the south coast outfit dropping into the Premier League relegation zone at the weekend having only won one top flight fixture all season.
The 55-year-old looks safe for now, but it appears clear that the club hierarchy are already sounding out replacements should results not improve soon, and Sousa is currently a free agent.
On the Chalkboard
Following unremarkable spells in British football with Swansea City and Leicester City between 2009-2010, the now 49-year-old has enjoyed relatively more successful times with the likes of FC Basel and Fiorentina since then.
His previous job with Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Quanjian was less impressive, and perhaps that was down to the constant tinkering of his formation – something which Hughes has also done throughout the current campaign – as per Transfermarkt.
The Playmaker FC squad decided to wind-up some unsuspecting Brazil fans at the Emirates on Saturday night. Watch the hilarious results in the video below…
Mark Hughes 2.0?
While Sousa certainly proved during his time with Basel and Fiorentina that he can get results, some of his decision-making is scarily similar to that of the current Saints boss.
The 49-year-old is clearly stubborn given comments he made during his time with The Viola, as reported by Squawka:
“We won’t change our tactics or system with the new players. I believe in consistency even in difficult moments. Our principles must remain the same, even with some variations that will come in time…to win we must attack, not defend. Even in tough times we have to persevere.”
Despite his tinkering in China, the Portuguese manager’s preferred system in general throughout his career in the dugout has been a 3-4-2-1 system – the same one that Hughes ditched during the Premier League opener against Burnley despite using it throughout pre-season – which the Southampton players also clearly didn’t suit.
