da imperador bet: Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic is a major doubt for next month’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers, according to The Scottish Sun.
What’s the story?
The paper say that the Australian did not take part in training last week at Lennoxtown and has now missed the club’s trip to Austria this week to take part in a pre-season training camp.
The Australian international now looks likely to at least miss the opening match against FK Sarajevo, just the latest fitness setback he’s suffered at Celtic over the last 12 months.
How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…
Long-term problems
Rogic is considered as one of Celtic’s most skilful players, with former boss Brendan Rodgers once famously saying he could play the game in a tuxedo.
When at the top of his game he is a lethal force in the final third for Celtic, scoring 35 goals and assisting 29 times in total for the club.
However, the problem is he just hasn’t been doing that quite enough over the last 12 months. The attacking midfielder managed to make just 26 starts last season, missing over half of the matches in the Hoops’ long season.
The 26-year-old spent January at the Asian Cup with Australia, missing the club’s winter training camp, then subsequently missed more action in February and March because of injury.
He spent the rest of the season playing catch-up with his fitness and the hope would have been he’d at least have a pre-season to get up to speed ahead of an important summer.
Rather unbelievably he’s never started over 30 matches in a single season once since joining Celtic in 2012 and it’s a situation that needs to be looked at, because right now the player is just not as reliable as he should be.
